The research, which has been commissioned by sunshine.co.uk, involved almost 1,900 people in the UK, aged 18 and over. They were first asked if they had ever purchased a holiday or trip for someone as a gift, to which 33% said yes.
These respondents were then asked who they had bought the break for, with partners (husbands/wives, girlfriends/boyfriends, significant others) topping the poll with 62%. This was followed by parents (24%) and friends (11%).
Of those who had purchased a holiday for someone else, they were asked if there was a special occasion behind the treat. 35% said it was for an anniversary, while 31% said birthday and 28% admitted it was just because they loved them.
A city break was found to be the most popular choice for a getaway gift (44%), with a beach break not far behind (42%). Meanwhile, the average spend on a trip bought as a gift for someone else was revealed to be £182 per person.
Interestingly, however, the survey also revealed that 77% of those who purchase a holiday as a gift also go along on the break. In fact, 51% went as far as to admit that they only chose the location because it was somewhere they personally wanted to visit – and not because the person they were buying the holiday for wanted to go.
Sue Anderson, sunshine.co.uk, said: "It seems gift buying has moved on from the traditional box of chocolate and bunch of flower bundles that people are so used to. Now, partners and parents seem just as likely to unwrap a surprise trip to Paris as they are a pair of slippers.
"As travel becomes more affordable with so many great deals about, it's easy to see why it's an option for people to treat others to a getaway these days."
