Dunham recently revealed she had to give up Lamby, a puppy she had for four years, due to him having behavioural problems and needing a stable environment.
Last month on Instagram, she wrote: "Last March, after four years of challenging behavior and aggression that could not be treated with training or medication or consistent loving dog ownership, Lamby went to live at an amazing professional facility in Los Angeles.
"Lamby suffered terrible abuse as a pup that made having him in a typical home environment dangerous to him and others- we needed to be responsible to ourselves, our neighbors and especially our beloved boy. Jack and I will miss him forever but sometimes when you love something you have to let it go."
However, the BARC no-kill animal shelter where Dunham originally adopted Lamby denied that the puppy had behavioural problems.
Speaking to Yahoo Celebrity, spokesman Robert Vazquez said: "When she adopted the dog from us, it wasn't crazy.
"We don't lie about the dogs' histories because that gets them returned - and mentally it's not good for the dogs."
Now Lamby's new owner, Trainer Dani Shay, has backed up Dunham's claims.
Speaking to The Daily Dot, Dani said: "Since Lamby came with evident behavioural challenges, we approached things slowly and carefully.
"Dunham checked in every step of the way, and we kept her fully informed. Matt and my co-workers were very supportive throughout the process."
