Australia Plans Postal Vote To Gauge Marriage Equality Support

Australia's government is planning to determine support for same-sex marriage though a voluntary postal ballot, it has been reported.

The news comes after the government's bill for a compulsory vote on the issue was rejected by the Senate.

If the postal vote goes ahead and it shows that there is support for changing the changing the current law, the results will not be legally binding. Same-sex marriage is against the law in Australia.

However, the move has been criticised by opponents claiming it is an unnecessary delay in resolving the debate, which they argue could be settled immediately in parliament. There are also reports that the postal vote could face a legal challenge over whether it is constitutional.

The government has said ballots could be sent to Australians as early as 12 September. Responses would be due by 7 November, and the result would be public by 25 November.
