Increase In Vitamin D Could Reduce Premature Birth

Increasing pregnant women's levels of vitamin D may decrease the chance of premature birth, according to new research.

The US study involved more than 1,000 pregnant women, up to 90% of who had a vitamin D deficiency.

This was particularly pronounced among African-American and Hispanic women, according to the results.

The researchers said the lower a woman's blood level of vitamin D was, the higher the risk of delivering a premature birth.

Women with low levels were offered free supplements to boost their vitamin D blood levels to at least 40 nanograms per milliliter.

Those with 40 nanograms had a 62% lower risk of premature birth than those with less than 20 nanograms.

The research, which has been published by PLOS, concluded: "Vitamin D testing and supplementation of pregnant women is a safe, affordable prevention tool that could substantially reduce the occurrence of premature birth and the heavy burden of associated morbidity, mortality and economic costs."
