Japan's Princess Mako Announces Engagement

Japan's Princess Mako has formally announced her engagement to a commoner.

The news comes after the royal received approval from the emperor to marry.

However, the marriage also means that the princess will lose her royal status – under Japanese law, female members of the imperial family forfeit their status upon marriage to a commoner.

In a press conference, Princess Mako said: "I was aware since my childhood that I'll leave a royal status once I marry. While I worked to help the emperor and fulfil duties as a royal family member as much as I can, I've been cherishing my own life."

Princess Mako's fiancé is 25-year-old Kei Komuro, a law firm employee.

The couple met five years ago while studying at university.
