The research, which was conducted by hitched.co.uk, involved 4,000 brides. It discovered that the average wedding in the UK now costs a staggering £27,161 – around 10% more than last year.
The cost of a wedding does vary depending on the region, with London coming in at an average of £33,884 and weddings in the Midlands costing £25,915.
The largest expense is said to be the venue, costing an average of £4,354, followed by the honeymoon (£3,650) and food (£3,353).
Contrary to tradition, when it comes to financing the big day, parents are no longer the sole financial contributors for the big day, with 51% of couples paying for their wedding with little help from family members, while 32% fund it entirely by themselves.
Elsewhere, the average cost of an engagement ring now stands at £2,084, up 17.6% from three years ago. Londoners, again, spend the most, forking out £3,133 while couples from the Midlands spent £1,810.
Commenting on the findings, Sarah Allard, Editor of hitched.co.uk, said: "It seems most couples are paying for their big day with a little family contribution, and inviting more guests to their day and evening celebrations too – both of which could account for an increase in total spend compared to last year.
"Perhaps less surprising that the average cost of an engagement ring is now the highest it's ever been with one in three brides now involved in choosing their ring too."
