There has been speculation for a number of years that the rapper had cheated on his wife, with the singer previously hinting at the couple's relationship in her music.
Now, for the first time, the 47-year-old has confessed to infidelity. In an interview with The New York Times Style Magazine, the rapper said that he'd built up walls as a result of issues from his childhood, which led him to shutting down his emotions.
He is quoted as saying: "The hardest thing is seeing pain on someone's face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself.
"You have to survive. So you go into survival mode, and when you go into survival mode, what happens? You shut down all emotions.
"So, even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can't connect. In my case, like, it's deep. And then all the things happen from there: infidelity."
He continued: "You know, most people walk away, and, like, divorce rate is like 50% of something 'cause most people can't see themselves."
In 2013, rumours first emerged that the rapper had been cheating on his wife. Then, there was the now infamous leaked CCTV footage – known by many as 'elevator gate' – in which Beyoncé's sister, Solange Knowles, attacked Jay-Z, in an elevator, while sister Beyoncé stayed silent and did not react.
In a joint statement released shortly after the elevator incident, the family said they had "worked through" their issues and were moving forward "as a united family". It is thought Jay-z alleged infidelity was the cause of the fight, but this has never been confirmed.
