Published in the journal Body Image, the study examined 384 woman and found that those unhappy with their size were not only less likely to self-examine, but also less confident in their ability to detect a change and slower to consult a doctor about issues with their breast.
The reports claimed that self-examination "may trigger negative emotions, such as shame and embarrassment".
It found that a third of the women "rarely or never" engaged in breast self-examination.
More than 55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year and the NHS advise women to self-examine so that they know how their breasts "usually look and feel" making them more able to detect any changes.
