RCM Launch Consultation On Latest Pay Offer

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has launched a consultation of its members on the government's latest pay offer.

The proposed pay agreement will see midwives and MSWs receive pay increases of at least 6.5% over three years, and an additional 1.1% in year two of the deal for those on the top of their pay band. Some staff will see increases of even more.

The agreement will also mean that staff progress through the pay bands and reach the top of each band quicker, as the number of increments in each pay band will be reduced. Starting salaries will also increase.

The deal negotiated by the RCM and other unions also means that unsocial hours payments, annual leave entitlements and sick pay have all been protected as part of the deal.

The RCM board is recommending that members accept the proposals as the best that can be achieved through negotiation, and the start of ending the pay restraint that midwives and MSWs have endured since 2010.

RCM Chief Executive Officer Gill Walton said: "This is a good deal for our members and is better than any other public sector pay offer. We have fought off attempts to reduce unsocial hours payments and change sick pay, and got significant increases in pay for many members and a good increase for most. This is a major achievement in the current climate and it is a deal that I and the RCM board urge our members to accept."

The online consultation will run from 01 to 31 May 2018.
