The Queen and other royals were told the baby news at last Friday's royal wedding, when Princess Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank, ahead of today’s announcement.
The palace took to Instagram to reveal Meghan's pregnancy and said they are "delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public".
"Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019," the statement said.
The baby will be seventh in line to the throne, and despite being a first cousin of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, it will not be a prince or princess unless the Queen steps in ahead of the birth.
The couple are currently in Australia, preparing to begin a 16-day royal tour of Australia and New Zealand, their first official royal tour since their wedding.
BBC royal correspondent Jonny Dymond revealed how Harry and Meghan first announced their pregnancy on Friday: "The Queen was told, The Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Duchess of Cornwall- they chose that day to spread the happy news around and then recovered and relaxed, got on a plane, came to Australia and then put out the news for the rest of us."
