Charlize Theron's Mother Taught Her To Be Brave

Charlize Theron has praised her mother Gerda, who shot and killed her father when he attacked her, for teaching her how to be brave.

The 43-year-old actress told Extra magazine that she learned how to be strong after the incident, which happened when she was just 15.


"I am lucky enough that I had a great mom who really kind of made me brave and always told me to be brave. I don't know who I might have been without that," she said.

"None of us are born knowing how to navigate life and difficult decisions."

The Fury Road actress previously spoke of living with an alcoholic father and the harrowing experience when her mother fatally shot him as he tried to attack her.
