Laverne Cox And Other Stars Vow To Fight President Trump's Trans Plan

Laverne Cox, Chelsea Manning and other stars have vowed to fight against President Donald Trump's plan to erase the rights of transgender people in the US.

Protests broke out on Sunday evening after The New York Times revealed a leaked Department of Health and Human Services proposal which would make a person's legal gender unchangeable from what is on their birth certificate.

LGBT+ rights groups, along with various celebrities and activists, have formed part of the huge backlash to the proposal, that would effectively destroy the protections enjoyed by trans people under the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

In a powerful Twitter thread, Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox posted: "We must not give up the fight. But in the face of this affront on my existence and the existence of my community I chose love not fear. We exist and always have."

Chelsea Manning, another leading trans activist wrote that "laws don't determine our existence" and urged her followers to continue their struggle against oppression.

Actress and producer Trace Lysette also joined the outrage.
