The poll was commissioned for The Emma Barnett Show on BBC Radio 5 Live.
ComRes questioned 1021 women who had been on maternity leave in the past 10 years, and learned that almost half of them felt lonely while on maternity leave.
Nearly one in five mums (19%) wished they'd returned to work earlier and 41% missed being at work.
It was also discovered that younger mums found it harder than those who were older when they gave birth, with almost half (45%) of the women aged 18 to 24 saying their leave wasn't the experience they had hoped for.
Radio host Emma opened up about her own struggles through maternity leave, and encouraged new mothers to discuss how they are "really feeling", and accept the fact that loving your new baby doesn't necessarily mean you love your new existence yet.
