Reports circulated last week that the Oscar winner had called it quits on his marriage after more than 20 years together.
In a statement to E! News, the Hollywood star said: "Grace and I have two beautiful children together. We are entering a period of transition in our relationship which is a difficult but constructive process.
"I honour Grace as a wonderful mother and ask for privacy and respect from all as we proceed to develop our roles as partners in parenting."
The pair got hitched in 1997 and welcomed their son, Elliot, a year later. They split briefly in 1999 before reconciling and later welcoming a daughter, Helen, via a surrogate in 2011.
Robert also has children from previous relationships.
