UK Achieves HIV Prevention Targets As New Infections Plummet

The UK has become one of the first countries to meet UNAIDS targets for HIV prevention, as efforts to tackle the condition prove dramatically effective.

Public Health England (PHE) recorded a drastic fall in new diagnoses of HIV in the UK, with just 4,363 new cases diagnosed in 2017.

It represents a year-on-year decrease of 17%.

According to PHE's report, the reduction is due to success in prevention efforts including frequent HIV testing and the use of HIV-prevention drugs.

The report also provided an update on the UK's progress towards global '90-90-90' targets for tackling HIV by 2020.

The requires 90% of people living with the condition to be diagnosed, 90% to receive treatment, and 90% of those in treatment to have undetectable viral loads, meaning they can not pass it on.

The UK is on track to meet the targets, with 92% diagnosed, 98% on treatment and 97% with virally supressed loads.
