Barry Manilow: Coming Out Would Have Killed My Career

American singer-songwriter Barry Manilow has said his career would have been ruined if he had came out as gay in the 1970s or 1980s.

The star didn't confirm his sexuality until 2017, in an interview with People magazine, after believing for many years that it would have ended his professional life as a singer.

In a recent interview with the Daily Mirror, he said: "It would have killed my career. Immediately.

"It was stupid then but it was true. Everybody knew it, we had to watch out for making a mistake. Not that everybody didn't know, people are very smart.

"I thought I wasn't hiding anything, but I was also not publicising it. If I publicised it, especially in the 70s and 80s- no way."

However the reaction from fans in 2017 ended up being an extremely positive one. "All they ever cared about was my happiness," Barry explained.

"I think they were thrilled I had someone in my life like Garry."

The couple met in 1978 and the star said he knew then that he was the one, after a year of marriage to his high school sweetheart Susan Deixler in the 1960s. Barry and Garry tied the knot in 2014, three years before the singer publicly came out and after almost 40 years together.
