Taiwan Legalises Same-Sex Marriage

Taiwan has become the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage.

Legislators passed a bill today, Friday 17 May, that defines the union between a same-sex couple as marriage rather than "same-sex unions" or "familial relationships", as proposed by opponents.

It comes on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia and marks the first country in Asia to enact the change.

Taiwan president Tsai Ing-Wen tweeted ahead of the vote: "Good morning #Taiwan. Today we have a chance to make history & show the world that progressive values can take root in an East Asian society.

"Today we can show the world that #LoveWins."
