The actress revealed how her two children with husband Scott Campbell, five-year-old Nova and Osgood, two, were both born struggling to breathe. Osgood was subsequently admitted to intensive care, an experience which Lake said left her feeling unlike herself.
Speaking on 'The Conversation with Amanda De Cadenet', she said: "I was like I need something, I can't be a person. I don't know how to be ... I had never felt that before.
"My heart aches for those who feel that through the hardship of their life every day, like, I have felt it. I know what it is and it's a monster. It's a demon."
The star said it took a comment from her daughter to make her realise how low she was feeling.
She recalled: "I remember my daughter saying at one point... 'Go away, monster, you go away!' and I was like, 'What? Are you okay? Is there a monster here?' and she said, 'He's still here. Go away monster. You can't play here!'
"I know what she's talking about. She feels like I'm not 'normal mommy.'"
Lake eventually addressed her situation and "begged" to be put on medication for own wellbeing, which she believes took her to a place where she could "just be".
